Performative activism is when individuals or institutions express support for  a social or political cause in  a way that is more about appearing socially aware or gaining approval from the broader society. It often involves symbolic actions like posting hashtags, slogans, or signs about a certain societal issue. Recent examples include people posting #BlackLivesMatter messages or using #SavePalestine on social media.

As Uganda prepares for the 2026 general elections, the country is witnessing an unprecedented trend: a significant increase in the number of young people picking up nomination forms to run for president. Among them, 20 year old Jorine Najjemba from Nkowe, a university student and youth activist, stands out as the youngest aspirant so far, openly expressing her discontent with the current government system and calling for change.
