After independence, Kenya had to choose how to share its land and wealth. Pio Gama
Pinto argued for a Socialist path: taking land back from colonial settlers and giving it for
free to the poor and the freedom fighters.
Instead, the government passed Sessional Paper No. 10, which chose a Capitalist path:
land would only be given to those who could afford to buy it ("Willing Buyer, Willing
Seller"). Pinto warned this would just create "Black Lord Delameres" a small group of rich
Africans replacing the rich white settlers, while the poor stayed poor. Pinto was
assassinated in 1965 for opposing this plan
