Communitarianism is the belief that individuals are shaped by and embedded within their communities, and therefore owe moral obligations to those communities beyond mere legal compliance. These obligations may include contributing through civic participation (e.g., voting), charitable giving, social cooperation, and everyday acts that prioritize communal well-being, even when such actions do not directly benefit the individual and may involve minor personal sacrifice.
While, Individualism is the belief that individuals are fundamentally autonomous and primarily responsible for their own lives and choices. Beyond obeying the law to maintain social order, individuals are not morally obligated to prioritize communal interests over personal goals. Under this view, choosing not to vote, not to donate to charity, or to prioritize personal enjoyment and self-advancement so long as one does not harm others is morally permissible.
